Adaptive Dance Program
YOUR CHILD MAY HAVE A DISABILITY, BUT THEY ALSO HAVE SO MANY CAPABILITIES!!
At Umbiance Center for the Performing Arts, we believe in creating a loving and nuturing environment where all students can thrive regardless of their abilities or disabilities.
The Adaptive Dance program was designed solely for the special needs children in our community. We would like to give our exceptional students an opportunity to move freely and creatively while enhancing each student's dance and coordination skills.
Dance Environment
The class will be held in a family oriented dance studio where the dance curriculum is modified so our students can gain the most from the class in a stress-free environment. We offer alternate pathways for all styles of dance. We will expose your child to a wide variety of music genres while keeping lyrics age appropriate. Movement will be simple and tailored to move at the pace of the students.
Class Routines
Understanding the need for structure and routine for our Adaptive Students, instructors will follow the same procedure each class. Student will start each class by locating and getting on their spots. Once students are in their spots, they will go through a series of uncomplicated stretches, warming up our head, arms and feet. Warmup and stretches will be done in a circle so that the students can all see each other on an equal level and can feel a sense of belonging.
After stretching is complete, student will then form two lines (applying ‘window’ spacing) to work on technique and choreography a dance. Some technique and steps students may learn include but are not limited to: ballet positions, pointing and flexing feet, standing in passé, three-step turns, grapevines, chasse and even pirouettes. Learned movement will be incorporated in choreography to reinforce skill. Again, the pace of the class will be determined by the students and how they progress.
BENEFITS OF THIS PROGRAM
Building Our Students
At times class will incorporate peer volunteers to assist in dance movements. This will allow students to work with other dancers their age to improve their skills and achieve their dance goals. As our Adaptive Students improve their skills, they will be encouraged to try one of our advanced dance classes as well as participate in special events, including recital.
Improves Motor Skills
Often kids with special needs like Downs Syndrome have motor skill delays. Dance provides a fun way for children to improve physical coordination and proficiency.
Increases Concentration
One of the benefits of exercising is helping to maintain mental focus. Children who have engaged in a dance movement therapy have shown significant improvements in the classroom in terms of reading, learning, attention, and general participation.
Helps Boost Mood
When we dance or exercise, in general, the body releases endorphins. These hormones produce a calming effect and help relieve stress and anxiety.
